Cara Membaca Bilangan Tingkat dalam Bahasa Inggris 


Angka di dalam bahasa Inggris:                       

One, two, three … ini adalah cardinal numbers (bilangan biasa).

First, second, third … ini adalah ordinal numbers (bilangan tingkat). 

Ordinal Number (bilangan tingkat) biasanya digunakan untuk menunjukkan urutan sesuatu atau seseorang. Di dalam bahasa Inggris cara membuat ordinal number (bilangan tingkat) yaitu dengan menambahkan akhiran -TH di akhir angka biasa (cardinal number). Dan di dalam bahasa Indonesia biasa diterjemahkan dengan ‘ke-‘ yaitu: kesatu (pertama), kedua, ketiga dan seterusnya.

Contoh:

Four – Fourth = keempat

Sixteen – Sixteenth = keenam belas 

Pengecualian utama adalah angka 1, 2, dan 3, yaitu dengan cara menambahkan akhiran -st pada angka 1, tambahan akhiran -nd pada angka 2 dan akhiran -rd pada angka 3. Sebagai berikut:

one – first

two – second

three – third

Penggunaan ordinal number biasanya diawali dengan kata sandang ‘THE’.

Berhati-hati juga dengan penulisan beberapa nomor urut:

five – fifth (bukan “fiveth“)

nine – ninth (bukan “nineth“)

Kita menggunakan ordinal number saat menuliskan tanggal.

Her birthday is on the 29th. (Twenty-ninth)

Their Independence Day is on the 4th of July. (Fourth of July)

Urutan

Kita menggunakan ordinal number ketika kita ingin menunjukkan urutan atau posisi seseorang atau sesuatu secara berurutan.

I came third in the race.

This is the first time it has happened.

Lantai Sebuah Bangunan

Our office is on the ninth floor.

She lives on the second floor.

Perayaan Ulang Tahun

He had a huge party for his twenty-first birthday.

Menuliskan Abad

Shakespeare was born in the 16th century.

Raja dan Ratu

PEMBENTUKAN KATA KERJA BERAKHIRAN –ED (VERB+ED)   Berikut ini adalah beberapa kriteria yang harus diperhatikan dalam menambahkan akhiran (suffix) -ed pada verb:   Verb (kata kerja) yang berakhiran huruf mati (consonant) a. Untuk verb (kata kerja) yang berakhiran huruf mati (consonant) yang didahului oleh satu huruf hidup (vowel) dengan satu suku kata (one syllable) seperti pada kata stop, rob dan beg mendapat akhiran (suffix) -ed dengan mengulang huruf mati (consonant) akhir verb (kata kerja) tersebut.
